Interview with Mehdi Bazyar director of "wall closet"
What was your motivation for making the film?
To be able to test the skills and ideas that I have acquired over the years in the world of art and cinema for this type of narrative and frequent style.
How did the idea of the film come to you?
My behavioral pattern has been formed in such a way that I have always tried to be an observer and I always try to get ideas from every incident. The initial spark of the film idea was formed in my mind at a party after all the guests left. After a while, we developed the idea with a screenwriter who is one of my friends.
What is your main goal of filmmaking in Iran?
My goal is generally started in my childhood and is that I have always had the desire to create and build from scratch until now and my effort has been to be part of the filmmakers so that I can create and portray my imaginary ideas.
How concerned is the subject of the movie and why did you choose this one?
My concern for making films has always been to be able to make films about the gaps and problems of society within the framework of the genre that I love which is noir.
How did you come to these cast and crew and what are your criteria for selection?
My criteria for choosing the cast depends on the type of narrative in the script and then the effort and hard work of each individual ones. My selection is in this way that I have personally seen the theaters to select actors, I have seen many films to choose my cast too, also I have personally searched for and some of them introduced by friends.
What were the Problems with the film production?
The main problem from the past and especially in the current situation is always been providing financial resources to make a film, and I have not been an exception to this rule.
Tell us about the positive points and good memories in making, producing, writing the script, finding the crew or any other subject that can inspire the filmmakers?
The empathy and support of each coworker has been one of the main points of the film for me, which doubled my motivation in the pre-production, production, and post-production days.
Tell us about the film funding and the challenges?
I must say that funding has always been the biggest obstacle for me and other filmmakers, since I wanted to work completely independently. People or institutions who are interested in cinema that the want to invest usually do not have a background in cinema and want to cooperate in art simply because they are interested and slow down the film production process. Therefore, I financed the film with difficulty and personal budget.
What are your expectations of your movie?
What I expect is that the efforts that me and every one of my crew and friends have made will be seen so that it will be a motivation for making future films.
Anything else you want to talk about?
I hope that one day the situation will be such that we independent filmmakers will not have to endure so much difficulty in obtaining financial resources so that we can just focus on making the film itself.
