Human history is full of violence, slavery, and blood. In the meanwhile, because of masculism and patriarchy, different forms of violence were more against women than men. The violence that has been supported by religions or social norms.
After millenniums and centuries, as we came closer to the present day, there have been efforts to lower the amount of this violence against women. but still, in many underdeveloped regions across the world, there are bizarre and primitive forms of violence, shocking to everyone who believes in rationality and liberty.
FGM cause pain, bleeding, and infection. It can increase infertility and infant mortality. One of the main purposes of the procedure is to suppress women sexually, and reduce betrayal chance because women who have undergone the procedure will not enjoy sexual activity and may experience pain.
In developed countries, the practice is legally prohibited and includes criminal punishment. while in some countries and among some ethnicities is considered an old tradition and many are seeking to legalize it.
The WHO estimated that 10–20 babies die per 1,000 deliveries as a result of FGM. 140 million girls and women worldwide are living with the consequences of the practice and approximately 3.3 million girls are at risk of FGM each year. every 10 seconds one girl is circumcised.
Superstitious reasons for FGM:
The main reason is to prepare girls for marriage. It is believed that FGM can decrease girls’ sexual needs so they can stay virgins before marriage.
It is also believed that FGM can help girl’s health, will purify their soul, increase their beauty, reduce their sexual desire before marriage, and will increase men’s sexual pleasure because there is this belief that evil spirits live in this part of female genitalia and therefore it must be removed. also, some believe that the procedure will ease childbirth and is a necessity for keeping traditions alive.
FGM is done in three major types:
Type I Clitoridectomy: partial or total removal of the clitoris (a small, sensitive, and erectile part of the female genitals) and/or in very rare cases only, the prepuce (the fold of skin surrounding the clitoris).
Type II (excision) is the complete or partial removal of the inner labia, with or without removal of the clitoral glans and outer labia.
Type III or pharaonic circumcision: The clitoris and labia minora are removed, and an incision of the labia majora is performed to create raw tissue; then the edges of the remaining labia majora are stitched together, leaving only a small hole that allows for the passage of urine and menstrual bleeding.
this type has higher health risks than the other two. because In ancient Egypt Pharaohs forced it on Jewish people living there, it is called pharaonic circumcision.
