Group introduction:

Trivia theatre group was founded in 2014 by Morteza Jalilidoust and Saba Nejati in Tehran.

02
They started their work in the faculty of fine arts, Tehran university. The first play was performed in a small festival in Tehran. The group then started recruiting new members and producing new plays which were based on original scripts.

03
Basing the group in the university, gave them the chance to work academically and experimentally.
"To be" is the group's newest play which was on stage for one month on April and May 2022 in Tehran, Iranshahr complex.

Director's statement:

"To be" is a product of the human's post-covid situation. A situation in which we are over vulnerability and death, but stuck in absurdity. We've looked into the eyes of death and now we see "to be or not to be" as options. We've chosen "to be" no matter how short our being is and decided to dedicate our moments to do what we love and enjoy. This is how we find a meaning for our being as does a weight-lifter by lifting the bar, an actor by playing a role, Hamlet by avenging his father's death and Sisyphus by carrying a rock.

"To be" is a reaction to Iran's obsolescent theatre. The theatre which is paralyzed by vast financial problems, censorship, and lack of motivation and has turned into something free of creativity and new experiences. The "overacting" form that we've been seeing in most of the plays for decades, became an idea for us to show it as a parody and "hold a mirror against nature"

Summary:

Sisyphus is pushing a rock to the top of the mountain. It then rolls down. Sisyphus keeps on pushing.

Hamlet must choose between two options; to be, or not to be.
Adrienne is dying. She’s an actress and therefore she won’t go to heaven. Yet, she refuses to ask God for forgiveness.

The weightlifter, lifts weights. He’s a champion. And he lifts weights for a lifetime.
Osiris is murdered. He comes back to life. He’s bound to live.
They’re all Sisyphus, we’re all Sisyphus.

* "To be" can be performed in both Persian and English
* "To be" can be performed with or without the scenery
* "To be" can be performed in a proscenium or a black-box theatre
* "To be" needs an environment in the minimum size of 9×9
“To be” is a show about suffering. The suffering of modern man in a world full of rules and dos and don'ts that man himself carries with him from the past to the present day. The suffering of Sisyphus and Hamlet to the suffering of the actor on the stage is an analysis of the problem of living and being forced to endure this suffering.

In this show, the actors constantly rotate in different positions of Sisyphus, Hamlet, Adrienne, Osiris, and the weightlifter and show this cycle of suffering from one person to another and from time to time with their different forms and expressions.

“To be” is also a critique of repetition in Iranian theater, some of which are caused by the influence of compulsory laws. Examples of these laws are the prohibition of women singing and the prohibition of certain sports for women, as well as their mandatory hijab.
