Scene Summary

We enter a café as if an avant-garde performance is taking place. Sohrab, a theater actor, has managed to perform on the stage of Vahdat Theater (the largest theater hall in Iran) with difficulty. He is seen in one of the city cafés, performing a dramatic monologue for the sake of bread, but the laughter of some boy and girls makes him nervous. Upon seeing the café environment, Sohrab attacks a boy and is expelled from the café. Dr. Ali teaches quantum physics at Sharif University and playing backgammon with Sadra, his companion. Shayan and Narges are going through a separation, and Gandum has been mediating between the two. Maryam is on a date with a lustful man, and she tells him it's her birthday today. The man suggests celebrating together in his house. Dr. Ali is sitting at a table with Dorna, a 4-5-year-old girl, and admits that he wants to prove that time is not the same for two tables in the same café at the same moment and place. Maryam, who has become younger, is with another man, and after hearing about Maryam's birthday, the man uses an excuse to leave the café. Narges and Gandum are sitting at a table, and Shayan joins them. Through Gandum's intervention, a relationship forms between Shayan and Narges. Sohrab returns to the café while intoxicated and tells his friend about his argument and physical altercation with the director for not having a dialogue, resulting in him being fired from work. Maryam seems become much younger and is sitting at a table with a boy who gives her a gift. Dr. Ali and Sadra are arguing at the table, and Sadra talks about Dr. Ali having a mental disorder. It turns out that Soudra and Dorna don't exist. Gandum and Shayan are at a table, and Narges arrives. Shayan confesses his feelings for Gandum to Narges and leaves. In solitude, Gandum expresses her love to Narges, and Narges splashes water from a glass on Gandum's face. Years have passed since Sohrab's story and now Sohrab lives in poverty and wanting to perform a monologue in the café and earn some money. Maryam returns from the restroom with her lipstick smeared all over her face (as seen for the first time). The lustful man drops some money and leaves. Maryam picks up the money, returns it to the man, and the man hits her. Maryam, crying and bewildered, goes to the table and asks the café staff to bring her birthday cake and blows out the candle alone. We leave the café while Ali is playing chess with himself, Gandum sits alone and cries, Maryam is sitting alone in front of her cake, and Sohrab performs a monologue for a meager amount of money. The café becomes empty, and we leave the café.

Director's Note

Psychological disorders in major cities, especially in Tehran, are spreading like crazy and becoming epidemic. Perhaps one of the most significant non-inherited reasons for this is the unsafe environment of society to have a proper conversation , which results in the loneliness of the human race. Loneliness is the main theme of my film. In this film, we have attempted to depict 4 tables in 3 different time lines, totaling 12 different time intervals, in a café within a single shot. The problems faced by homosexuals in Iran, whether with the government, families, society, or even close friends, are so terrifying that making a film about them is considered a crime.

This film is a real sequence plan without using special effects in the intersection of the plans, which is designed based on the system of small parts, which is produced at a completely personal cost and ready for release., although its screening in Iran seems almost impossible.

Many sequence plans have been made in the cinema, each of which has a special place in the cinema. In the cinema, the shooting that takes place in the sequence plan method has many problems and it cannot be easily bypassed because the directing and filming team and all the cinematographers have to multiply their efforts in shooting the sequence plan. In Iranian cinema, there are also acclaimed sequence plan films. Cafe Miran is one of the few Iranian short films that have used this technique in the production of the work.
